BREAKING: Linebacker Alex Mitchell intends to enter the transfer portal
Derek Mason and the MTSU Blue Raiders suffer a massive blow as standout inside linebacker Alex Mitchell will enter the transfer portal after missing most of this season
The Middle Tennessee suffered a serious blow this afternoon as standout inside linebacker Alex Mitchell intends to enter the transfer portal this offseason, sources confirmed to GoMiddle.
He was limited to just four games for the Blue Raiders this season due to injury, recording 28 tackles and three tackles for loss on the year, including a 16 tackle performance against a powerful Jacksonville State rushing attack led by Cam Cook. With him appearing in just four outings, he is expected to qualify for a medical redshirt and get an additional year of eligibility for next season.
The local product was a huge addition last offseason, choosing MTSU over Power Four interest from programs such as Oklahoma State and Wisconsin.
He returned home after three productive years at Chattanooga, playing in all 34 games during his time with the program while starting each of the 23 games over his last two seasons.
In his final season with the Mocs, he recorded 101 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, four passes defended as well as a pair of forced fumbles and interceptions each.
There was an expectation that he would return to lead the defense for next year, but that has now passed and the Blue Raiders will have to find a new centerpiece of the defense at middle linebacker for the 2026 season.
