WR commit Lex Baskin discusses his recruitment, why MTSU was the right fit
MTSU football landed its seventh member of the 2027 class over the weekend, with Brentwood Academy star wideout Lex Baskin announcing his commitment on Sunday afternoon. He’s been one of the most productive offensive players in Tennessee over his high school career and is the No. 9 wide receiver in his class, per Prep Redzone.
“I really like MTSU and the coaching staff. I’m excited to play in front of my home crowd. I like the staff and I have a strong relationship with Coach (Calvin) Lowry,” Baskin tells GoMiddle. “I am excited to be in the same [position] room as him.”
Middle Tennessee has been looking at the in-state product for a minute, but offered him on Feb. 18, then continued to build that relationship. He felt strongly about his coaches from the jump, which helped him throughout this process.
Lowry has been Baskin’s main recruiter and has done a great job of making him feel like part of the Blue Raider family. In fact, the rising senior tells me that his bond with the position coach is one of the things that led to this decision.
“[My relationship with Coach Lowry played] a big part, actually. It’s very important to me to have a strong relationship with my wide receivers coach,” Baskin said. “He consistently makes it feel like MTSU is the place to be.”
He offers solid size for his position, standing 6-foot and weighing 175 pounds with an athletic frame and long arms. The 2027 prospect is a unique player, as he can move all over the field and be used in several ways. He excels at going over the middle to catch balls, but can also hit defenses downfield for chunk plays. Baskin is athletic with the necessary length to move the chains inside and out of the hashes.
The wideout doesn’t have top-end size, but is tough and high-points the football well, making up for a decent bit of what he may lack in size. He has nice hands and is one of the best in Tennessee at tracking passes, especially on deep routes where he must adjust. I love the upside with this receiver and am excited to see what he looks like heading into his senior season at Brentwood Academy.
Baskin is a true Tennessee native and has played all of his high school football in the Nashville area, which makes it even sweeter to stay home for college football. That’s been a big piece of his recruitment.
While committing to Middle Tennessee has always been on his mind, Baskin tells me that it finally clicked last week. He liked what Derek Mason and the Blue Raiders were cooking, so he wanted to get on board.
The pass catcher instantly becomes one of the top commits in this class, and could finish as one of the most intriguing prospects in Conference USA. MTSU is nowhere near done with its class, but this was an excellent addition that should pay off in the future.
